Pregnant mum's cancer battle
PREGNANT with twins - this should be one of the happiest times for Nyrie Contor and her husband Wayde.
But last month, three months shy of her due date, the couple and their son Hudson, 5, were faced with the earth-shattering news that Nyrie had a very aggressive form of breast cancer.
"Gestational breast cancer is not very common. It only makes up 1% of all cancers," Nyrie said.
Doctors suspect Nyrie's cancer may have started developing soon after she gave birth to her son but only became aggressive once she fell pregnant with her twins.
"It's just amazing that this one little lump can just change your life so dramatically," she said.
"My type of cancer ... grows with hormone stimulants - because I've got lots of progesterone and lots of oestrogen and because it's a dual pregnancy ... that's why it's just grown so quickly."
Despite the lump being removed from her breast it is unknown if, or how far the cancer has spread in Nyrie's body, forcing her to deliver her babies eight weeks early.
"I was told it probably has spread to other parts of my body because of the aggressiveness of it.
"But I can't have an MRI and a CAT scan (until the babies are delivered)."
Nyrie is scheduled to deliver her babies, via caesarean, on Monday and will start chemotherapy two weeks later.
Sadly it could be several months before Nyrie can cuddle her babies or kiss her son.
"With chemo, because of the toxins they're putting in your body I can't actually have skin-to-skin contact with any of the kids," she said.
"That's going to be the hardest thing."
Nyrie is encouraging other women, particularly pregnant women, to check their breasts for lumps regularly and consult their doctor if they have any concerns.
