City event turns up the heat on Crossfit athletes
THE fitness revolution was in full swing on Saturday as 300 Crossfit trainers endured extreme heat for WODStock.
Limestone Park was bathed in glorious sunshine with temperatures reaching a scorching 37 degrees, but it was no deterrent to the super-fit athletes.
They competed in the Battle of the Swich II, the third round in a regional competition pitting the best Crossfit athletes against each other.
WODStock director Shaune Irvine said despite the trying conditions, the competitors proved how fit they are.
"It's 37 degrees and they are still performing at their best," he said.
"The program wasn't actually released until today so they didn't know how to prepare."
The field included a range of seasoned Crossfit veterans and amateurs, but Mr Irvine said the day was about encouraging individuals to get the best out of themselves.
"Some have been doing it for a week and some have been doing it for two years. It's a community of like-minded fitness people who want to change the way they are being viewed.
"The support themselves all the way, but they don't know each other from a bar of soap."
Athletes came from the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Brisbane to compete.
The final round will be held on the Sunshine Coast in December and the final at QEII Stadium in January.
The competition was born after a meeting of the minds from Crossfit enthusiasts in south-east Queensland.
Mr Irvine said over 1000 people had come to Limestone Park during the day to support the competitors.
"We came together to provide a serious competition for these athletes who want to test themselves."
The funds raised from WODStock will be donated to charity Koins for Kenya, to build a community in a rural town.
As of yesterday, WODStock were well on their way to reaching their target of $15,000.
They had raised a total of $9000.
