Business and economics course proposed for Year Five
STUDENTS as young nine could soon be learning the essentials of business and economics, as part of the new national curriculum.
A new course, on the fundamentals of economics and business, was proposed in an issues paper released by the Federal Government on Tuesday.
The paper outlines new lessons to be taught to Year Five primary school students on resource allocation and making choices, the business environment, consumer and financial literacy and work.
School Education Minister Peter Garrett said the paper recognised the importance of understanding business and economics for young people and would help prepare them to manage their own finances in the future.
"This curriculum will equip the next generation of entrepreneurs, innovators and business people to continue to grow the Australian economy as well as take advantage of the global business opportunities the Asian Century will bring," he said.
The paper was developed with input from state and territory governments, non-government educators, teachers, schools, the business community and universities.
