Boy, 5, in pool drowning drama

A YOUNG boy was taken to hospital after almost drowning at the Maryborough Aquatic Centre during its first day of operation yesterday.

The boy, believed to be aged about five, was seen floating face-down in the heated pool about 11.15am - just over an hour after the official opening ceremony for the facility.

He was dragged from the water and lifesavers immediately began CPR.

Witnesses said the boy coughed up "a lot of water".

He was conscious and crying when two ambulance crews arrived. He was taken to Maryborough Base Hospital, where his condition last night was believed to be non-life-threatening.

Pool manager Paul Jones praised the lifesavers, saying they reacted quickly.
