Big-hitting teen to make most of Scorchers call-up

BIG CHANCE: Hayden Greig will make his debut for the Scorchers today.

CRICKET: He expects to be in the team for only one game - for now - but Scorchers debutant Hayden Greig intends to make his mark.

The lower-order batman, 18, has been named in the Sunshine Coast side to play Valley in a one-day match in Brisbane today.

He was promoted from the club's reserve grade side after Ash Gray was ruled out for family reasons.

While he is known as a power-hitter, Greig insists he is not a slugger. If possible, he said he liked to build an innings.

And that is what he wants to do with his game as well - establish himself as a first-grade regular and then go further.

He said his ability to get a start was one of his strengths.

"I can get myself in," he said.

"I'll give myself the best chance before I go out and have a whack.

"I'm not just playing a numbers game and getting runs once in every four innings."

Greig, who will bat at No.7 today, anticipates being back in reserve grade next week - even if he scores runs.

But then again, he did not expect to get this chance - not this soon, anyway.

He said: "I've obviously been trying to score runs lately and have had a few good innings (his highest score this season is 74).

"The reason they gave me a go is because Ash Gray is out and they need that extra hitting power towards the end.

"With Ash being out, they feel I'm the next best man for the job.

"It would have to be (a score of) 100-plus for me to stay, but even then it would be difficult, I think," he added.

Scorchers captain Gerard Flegler said Greig had potential.

"He's certainly got some ability," he said. "He's come through our system, which is great."

Sunshine Coast - sitting in sixth place overall on the XXXX Gold Premier Grade ladder and eighth place on the one-day ladder - has made two other chances for today's encounter.

Steven Heise comes in for Matthew Gale - who is in the Queensland Bulls side that plays New South Wales in a Ryobi Cup one-dayer tomorrow - while James Henry has replaced the dropped Lewis Waugh.

Flegler said Valley - placed seventh on both the overall and one-day ladders - and the Scorchers were evenly matched.

"The last couple of years we've had some good battles against them," he said.

"They're certainly a similar side to us … (but) if we play to our strengths, hopefully we'll come away with the points."

The Scorchers are an improving side, and Flegler likes what he is seeing.

"We've played some reasonable cricket the last couple of weeks," he said.
