Beer goggles show true alcohol impact

THERE were a few people stumbling out the front of Grand Plaza at Browns Plains last Friday as many tried to walk in a straight line while wearing beer goggles.

While there were many laughs and giggles from the crowd, the goggles were actually part of a safety demonstration to highlight how it would feel if a person had consumed a vast amount of alcohol.

The demonstration was part of the SafeRoads4Logan campaign, which was aimed at upcoming school leavers.

Deputy Mayor and Safe Roads Advisory Committee chairman, Councillor Russell Lutton said the greatest need for road safety was in the Browns Plains and Jimboomba corridor.

"We specifically wanted to target youth drivers in the Browns Plains to Jimboomba corridor because this is traditionally the area where we have the greatest number of serious accidents and fatalities," he said.

"While they only make up 15% of the population, young people account for about 25% of deaths and injuries on our roads.

"As a council, we want to do what we can to reduce this frightening road toll.

"An important step in doing this is making young motorists aware of their responsibilities and the dangers of getting behind the wheel of the car."

Cr Lutton said while wearing the goggles, people felt the same distortion of space and shapes as people under the influence of alcohol.

"It was certainly a clear reminder of how much alcohol can impair the judgement of a driver and the need to stay under the limit of .05," he said.

Students were also able to talk to police officers and ask questions while also gaining information from health professionals about the dangers of mixing drugs and alcohol while driving.
