Australia to sign second commitment to Kyoto Protocol

AUSTRALIA will officially sign up to another seven years of the Kyoto Protocol on carbon emissions later this month, Climate Change Minister Greg Combet announced on Friday.

With the first Kyoto deal to end on December 31, Mr Combet said Australia was up for a second commitment period from January 1, 2013 to 2020.

The second period will allow the nation's businesses access international carbon credits under the Clean Development Mechanism.

The new agreement was also likely to include more nations including the United States, China, the European Union, India and Japan.

A week of international meetings will be held in Qatar at the end of November to sign the deal.
