CONSTRUCTION has started on six new apartments in Logan Central which are specifically designed to help offer affordable housing to help meet the needs of the region's growing population.

The $1.4 million development of the six new apartments with one, two and three bedrooms will be located at the new Tallowwood on North complex, on North Rd, Logan Central.

It is the city's first residential development to be built under the Logan Central Draft Master Plan.

This project, which will be built in conjunction with Horizon Housing, Logan City Council and the Federal Government, is just one of 24 projects to be funded under the Government's Liveable Cities Program.

Horizon Housing chief executive Jason Cubit said this project would be used as a model for the creation of more high standard affordable homes throughout the city.

"Horizon Housing has identified the need for new community and affordable housing products in Logan to alleviate housing stress," he said.

"Over the coming years, Logan Central is expected to become home to an increasing number of retirees and empty nesters as well as single and couple households and young families, so our development has been designed to cater for this broad sector of the market."

Horizon Housing already provides affordable and community housing throughout the city, with more than 50 residents benefiting from a 25% subsidy on market rent, equating to an estimated saving of $3000 per year.

Logan City Council Deputy Mayor Russell Lutton said he was pleased with Horizon Housing's plan and willingness to help address the need for affordable housing in the city.

"Without a doubt, there is a desperate shortage of appropriate and affordable accommodation in Logan, especially for one-bedroom units," Cr Lutton said.

"These plans are certainly a step in the right direction towards providing appropriate housing and I am sure there are many in the community who are feeling as positive and excited about this opportunity as I am."

Federal Member for Rankin Craig Emerson said the new project was sure to bring a lot of interest.

"The apartments are quality accommodation which is very important," he said.

"This is a great spot for this development, as it is right in the heart of the south-east and in Logan.

"There are many amenities nearby such as local shops and the Woodridge train station.

"I would like to thank both Horizon Housing and Logan City Council for their efforts."

In total, the Federal Government granted more than $600,000 to the project, with Logan City Council and Horizon Housing contributing the rest.
