IT MIGHT sound like the opening line of a joke, but a horse really did walking into the Rosewood Hotel on Sunday afternoon.

Pat Lenihan was riding his 14-year-old horse Stagecoach along John St in Rosewood when Ipswich councillor and Rosewood Hotel owner David Pahlke found him.

"David said to me 'It'd be a great photo if you could get his head through the door'," Mr Lenihan said.

"I said 'Just his head? I'll get all of him in there.'

"He's a real quiet horse, you can take him anywhere."

Mr Lenihan said while it wasn't his first time in a pub, Stagecoach wasn't a barfly.

"He doesn't have a drink, but I've been known to have a few.

"I've taken him into the Ipswich Show Bar before, but this was the first time I'd taken him inside one of the locals."

Cr Pahlke said the odd incident took place just as the hotel was shutting down.

"It was the end of the day, we were closing up and there was no one else in the bar," he said.

"This is the first time I've ever seen a horse in a bar in Rosewood."

Following the brief visit Cr Pahlke dubbed Stagecoach "Wilbur the Wonder Horse."

"He's a real docile horse; he doesn't get spooked by people."

Despite Stagecoach's nature, Mr Lenihan said the visit to the hotel was the first time he'd ridden the horse in a year.

"He's getting a bit old, but he still does campdrafting.

"Yesterday was the first time I'd ridden him in a year."
