Drunk man crept into room and raped sleeping woman

AN IPSWICH man convicted of raping a young woman as she slept will spend 15 months in prison.

The 30-year-old married Brassall man crept into the room where the woman was sleeping after a party at Ripley on March 20 last year.

Ipswich District Court heard the woman woke up to find him raping her and immediately kicked him away.

The man tried to accost her a second time and she kicked out again, forcing him into retreat.

The hysterical young woman, 18, woke her boyfriend up and they went to police the following day.

The man was charged, but denied the accusations and took the case to trial.

This week a district court jury found him guilty of one count of rape.

The verdict followed a two-day trial. In sentencing him, Judge Deborah Richards said the "exploitation of a sleeping woman was inexcusable".

Judge Richards said the victim had been in a very vulnerable position because there was no way she could resist the attack until she woke up.

She noted the offender didn't have any previous convictions for sex offences and had a good work history.

The court had been told the incident took place after a drunken party, but the victim had not been drinking.

"Illegal activity while drinking isn't foreign to you," Judge Richards said.

The man was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, to be suspended after he has served 15 months.

As he was led from the dock his wife clutched him and the pair sobbed.
